Fremont Avenue was invaded today as The Red Bull Soap Box
derby rolled into town. After weeks of propaganda blaring
from the recently installed televisions at the QFC supermarket
on 45th, the carts finally got their chance to test the slopes
and slants of Seattle's Fremont neighborhood. And test did
they ever, cruising and careening down the steep slope of
Fremont Avenue 600 meters before crashing into the hay bails
that surrounded the race course. It was an awesome event featuring
36 teams, a handful of jumbotrons broadcasting live action,
all manner of slick, MTV style commentators, and even Sir
Mix-a-lot holding up his scorecard from the elevated judge's
table. What more could a person ask for?
Words can hardly describe the glory that is soap box racing
especially when the competitive aspect is geared toward debauchery
rather than the need for speed. Carts ranged from racing pickels
to giant sized cameras on wheels, slick rockets to raging
rhinos, a floating sushi roll to Fremont's own notorious Troll
statue on wheels. Rather than blab any further, just check
out the below pics to feel the power of cart racing Seattle
style!
