Scott Muoio "The King of Fun"

"The King of Fun" Scott Muoio is the mastermind behind The 45 Day Trip. After working 145 1/2 hours in less than a week, The KoF blew it all on a whim. Setting sail in his '81 Mercury Zephyr, $2,000 bucks in his pocket, and an oversized map in his backseat, Muoio tore across the country and back in what is today recognized as a landmark acheivement of ballsy arrogance and assinine stupidity.

Heather Stroud

Muoio's better half during The 45 Day Trip, Heather was working the land in Minnesota when the trip began. After rendezvouing with The KoF for a short stint in The Land of 1,000 Lakes, Heather joined the trip for good in Las Vegas eventually returning back east for the conclusion of the journey. The yin to Muoio's yang, Heather was a steadying force who held together Muoio's fragile psyche when it was most at risk of shattering into a million pieces. She was also quite the cutie.

Rob "Sweat Shop" $hier

The loose canon of the trip, "Mister Stroud," as the call girls came to know him, was the thunder to Muoio's lightning. Shier jumped from an airplane in the scorching Hemet heat, complained to tourists at Disneyland, flashed the elderly at Red, White, and Blue nude beach, burned rubber in the wee hours across the barren California/Nevada dessert, and traveled for two weeks the Pacific Coast Highway from San Francisco to Los Angeles. An essential co-pilot and ball of fire, Rob was an integral player and contributor to some of the best hi-jinx of the entire trip.

Chris Corde

Chris (far right) met Muoio and Shier in Los Angeles. He shared a hotel bed with Rob at The Stardust in Las Vegas and erased footage of the largest thermometer in the world. He was also pivotal in making the most unpolitically correct comments in the least amount of time, essential to any good cross country excursion.

The 1981 Mercury Zephyr

The now classic Mercury Zephyr was the life blood of The 45 Day Trip. Purchased from a dead man in 1993 with only "32,000" miles on the odometer, The Zephyr did the impossible in 1997 traversing the country with godspeed. Unable to make right turns as the trip concluded, The Zephyr still made it all the way.

After sitting untouched in the Muoio family garage for several years following the trip, The Zephyr was unceremoniously sold in 2002 by Mrs. Muoio for $25 bucks to a scrap dealer. The King of Fun still laments the sale (which he didn't find out about until weeks later) and can be heard to this day clamoring about how awesome The Zephyr would have been as a candidate for the television show, "Pimp My Ride." It would have been, I'm telling you!

Four years after The 45 Day Trip, Muoio returned to San Francisco for the first time during his return home to New Jersey after living in Seattle for nine months. Unbeknownst to him at the time, he posed for the exact same picture he'd previously posed during his cross country oddyssey. Note the little tree in the upper right is still growing!

Fate playing tricks or just one of those strange chance occurances? You decide.
