I arrived at Ichi Roll Wok &
Teriyaki at about 8:30pm on a Thursday night. That
most likely isn't the best time to try a restaurant's
teriyaki, but sometimes those things happen and a restaurant
has to adapt. One of the best ways it can adapt is by
doing the little things that get noticed. In the case
of Ichi Roll that little thing is a small sign
near the soda fountain that exclaims, "free egg soup."
Now I didn't actually try the
egg soup on my visit, and in the interest of full disclosure
I actually hate eggs in general, but just knowing
that Ichi Roll went the extra mile warms my cockles,
brings joy to my black heart, and reaffirms my faith that
humanity might not be so bad after all. Now if only
Ichi Roll's other sign didn't list a charge for soda
refills that feeling might have lasted longer than 30
seconds. But I digress...
Outside of the free soup and a fortune
cookie, Ichi Roll's teriyaki is run-of-the-mill.
The chicken is meaty and mostly white but comes with a
sauce that seems a little blander than one might hope.
The typical iceberg lettuce salad is standard and features
a watery lemon ranch dressing. The rice is dry and old
tasting, which might be an anomaly given my late arrival,
but the overall cost, $6.39 plus tax, which comes to about
5 cents over 7 bucks total, is kind of high. That the
girl behind the counter didn't just make it $7 even isn't
her fault but it is a bit silly her waiting while
I went through my book bag scrounging for pennies.
On the whole Ichi Roll Wok and
Teriyaki is alright but not quite good enough to
recommend. It worked for me in a pinch but between the
cost and nothing about the meal standing out (except the
FREE EGG SOUP) I'd much rather try a new place the next
time I've got the teriyaki urge.
