Any adolescent boy who grew up in
the late '80s/early '90s and had access to cable television
will probably remember the name Rhonda Shear. As the host
of USA Network's Up All Night, the over developed,
nightie wearing vixen lit up the airwaves performing in-studio
vignettes between over sexed girls-lose-their tops films.
Now I haven't thought about Rhonda
Shear in well over a decade. So imagine my surprise when
while waiting at the 5 Seasons Grill for my chicken
teriyaki order an Ahh Bra informercial blared from the
TV featuring none other than Ms. Shear. What the hell
was Rhonda Shear doing shilling sports bras on TV? And
why the hell was the 5 Seasons playing this bizarre
infomercial? And lastly, why the hell was it taking this
place 30 minutes to give me my damn order?
Boobies or no boobies, when my order
finally did arrive I was a bit pertubed. Worse, the scene
quickly degenerated into the most polarizing chicken teriyaki
encounter I have ever experienced.
First, the bad...
$6.99 plus tax for a tiny portioned
grilled chicken teriyaki plus steamed white rice and a
miniature salad is ridiculous. A 30 minute wait for said
order is equally absurd.
Now, the good...
5 Season's grilled chicken
teriyaki is possibly the best tasting teriyaki in Seattle.
Their sign outside avertises just that claim and for once,
the self agrandizing statement is actually true. With
an amazing hoisin teriyaki glaze, the mostly white meat
perfectly grilled chicken is delectible. It also tastes
astoundingly fresh which may explain why it took 30 minutes
for my order to arrive.
The accompanying side salad is also
the best in Seattle. Green leaf lettuce, cucumbers, tomatoes,
and shredded carrots are enhanced by a Vietnamese dressing.
Delighful! If only there was a bit more.
The white rice is amply portioned
and also tastes as fresh as the chicken. Phenomenal!
With so much good in the 5 Season's
chicken teriyaki it is a damn shame that the service is
slow and the portions so skimpy. I suspect the proprietors
might be cheap bastards as they even failed to give me
my nickle change. But regardless of its shortcomings,
5 Season's chicken is outstanding and will perfectly
satisfy a small appetite. The taste and freshness stand
atop the very crowded Seattle teriyaki heap while the
price and portions are at the bottom.
As for Rhonda - she stills looks good
and is as funny as ever. Kudos to her for parlaying her
humorous sex kitten role into an undergarment career.
