Rachel's
swollen ankle meant only more pain for her opponents
Sunset
Forever's dream season came to a stunning conclusion
Sunday as the rag-tag rollers fell to eventual champions the
Gutterballs in a gut-wrenching,
mind-boggling, never before seen ultimate climax. Following
a nip and tuck battle that featured wild momentum swings and
key Vitamin-C shots consumed by
Sunset's players, the game ended
in shocking fashion: a dead heat. Tensions were high following
the tie as the teams and officials debated an appropriate measure
to determine which squad would advance to the championship match.
The final verdict: a 1-frame sudden death playoff.
Like getting
dumped, kicked in the nuts, and pepper sprayed in the eyes all
at the same time, Sunset Forever
fell to their rivals by yes, you guessed it, 1 measly pin. It
was the type of season ending conclusion you tell your kids
about, a tale worthy of being enshrined in epic poetry, and
a heart breaking memory that will haunt our precious team for
the rest of our lives. Yet the ultimate irony came 45 minutes
later as Gutterballs knocked off
Sinners And Saints with a score
less than Sunset's game 2 pin count.
Ouch!
Regardless
of who walked away with the Sunday 4:30pm trophy, not enough
can be said for the heart, determination, and spirit of Sunset
Forever's mighty players. Kudos to Rachel
Chen for overcoming black eyes, swollen ankles, and a
shortage of Jack Daniel's behind
the bar and coming through each and every week with outstanding
performances that made her unquestionably the mightiest female
in the league. Props to "Gentle"
Dan Halos whose slow ball of purple
doom meant trouble for pins and opponents alike. When
it came to spares no one could hold a candle to our fearless
Dan. Applause to Alexis
Rush and Jenny
Hapgood who could always be counted on to defeat the
opponent's second female scorer. Three cheers for our season's
many subs, Randy, Alecia, Sara, Meghan,
and Dave who picked up the
slack when the regulars were unavailable. And finally, thanks
to our team captain, Joey Johnson,
who somehow put this magical team together. After hearing of
our nail-biting playoff performance, he called us "accidentally
great." In my opinion, nothing could be farther from the
truth. Fact of the matter is we are great and proved
it each and every Sunday afternoon.
For everyone
who bowled, drank, cheered, and partied with us there was one
consesus beyond all others: win, lose, or draw, we were
the champions... of the world!
Sunset
Forever.
