Old Faithful

When I first saw Yellowstone Park's Old Faithful geyser in 1997 it was glorious! I drove up to the spigot, followed the throngs, and then POW, the bastard blew some 30 feet in the air for a good couple of minutes. Post-gushing, I followed the horde back to the parking lot, jumped in the old Mercury Zephyr, and got the hell out there like a bison stampeding an oblivious tourist.

2007's experience, on the other hand, was far from glorious and dare I say pretty damn crappy. Alexis and I waited close to two hours staring at the gurgling hole as the other unwitting marks appeared beside us. Then, of course, the bastard blew, maybe for a minute and hardly reaching any height on the glorious scale. Alexis was more excited to beat the rush out of there than she was to see the old bastard do his thing. So sure, Old Faithful still remains the top attraction at Yellowstone, but that doesn't mean it can't also be the most dissapointing. Below are my pics from both visits.

The Glorious Journey Across America

Music Jukebox!

The Soundtrack of The Glorious Journey occurred not by careful planning but rather by mood swings, availability, and chance. The albums, artists, and songs we wound up listening to don't necessarily have anything to do with where we were or what we were doing, but then again, maybe they do.

Out of the 500 or so albums we brought along (in CD and mp3 formats) only a fraction were ever removed from our oversized binders. Whatever the meaning of what we chose perhaps there is none. But if there is, maybe someday it will come to us and all will be illuminated. Until then, enjoy making your own deductions and hypotheses.

Wall Drug or Bust

Driving across America gives a person a lot of time to sit, listen, and observe the land that is passing before her eyes. And one of the most notorious sights is the passing of Wall Drug signs which gloriously announce the impending arrival of the world's most ridiculous drug store in Wall, SD.

In truth, the place (or more aptly, the block of places) is pretty crappy but an inevitable talking point for anyone who has ever traversed I-90 west through South Dakota. This trip I decided to count the signs, aggravating Alexis but keeping myself busy enough that South Dakota passed by in the blink of a eye. Glorious, indeed!

Total Wall Drug signs spotted while traveling west on I-90: 79

First sign: "355 Miles to Wall Drug," in Worthington, MN

The Tale of Gas

Fueling up is an inevitable part of driving cross country. Therefore, it provides yet another bit of information that can be documented for posterity. Who cares, you might ask? Well, maybe no one, but if history has taught us anything it is that the more information we have of the past the better can we understand our future. Or, something like that.

Tips for the Road

Bring lots of music. There are long stretches of road where radio stations are practically non-existent. Be prepared!

Camp at state parks. State parks are cheaper and generally much more scenic than private campgrounds. Showers and electric hook-ups may not be present though running water and at least an outhouse always will.

Be prepared for the unexpected. If you can reasonably drive more miles than your itinirary predicts, go for it. You never know just what locale might win your heart and gaining that extra time beforehand will allow you to enjoy your new favorite place without worry of falling behind schedule.

Stop at Visitor Centers. At the entry point to all states on interstate highways are visitor centers. These centers provide free of charge a wealth of interesting information including maps, lodging tips, and scenic locales you might otherwise have never known existed. A short stop at each one will ensure you're in the know wherever you might find yourself.
