In the song "A Long December" by Counting
Crows, lyricist Adam Duritz sings, "I can't remember all
the times I tried to tell myself to hold on to these moments as
they pass." It is a line that, since I first heard it in
1997, I have been unable to shake from my constantly plotting
subconscious. And more than that, it is these which have guided
many of my actions and thoughts the last ten years, ensuring that
as I make memories I am constantly fighting to make them last
forever.
Afraid of not fully and totally appreciating life
as I live it, the last ten years I have been obsessed with chronicling
all my experiences as they happen in pictures, video, and words.
Not enough to merely experience something, all must be recorded
for a posterity I don't understand but can't help continuing to
prepare for. It is a sick twist of fate, my obsession, but a mania
that continues to dictate my every thought and action. Strange,
for sure, but a lifestyle once it consumed me I have been unable
to shake.
The fruit of my labors can be found most prominently
here, in the words of The Glorious Journey Across America. Not
merely diary entries chronicling day-to-day goings on, the words
to follow represent the hope, dreams, and fears of one man trying
to make his way in this sometimes glorious, sometimes frightening
America the beautiful that he calls home. So come along, if you
please, and join me as I recount the tale of my summer of 2007.
