Located at the very corner of Lower
Queen Anne on the ground floor of an office building is
The Sandwich Tree. On Thursdays they have a French
Dip special so I decided to make the trip on a mild January
afternoon. They were surprisingly busy, but the line moved
quickly because of the efficient staff. Within a few minutes
I received my $5.99 French Dip and side salad and headed
back to the office lunchroom.
Unfortunately, the French Dip special was not so special.
The first thing that came to my mind was the notion that
I could have made this sandwich in my own kitchen. They
used a hoagie roll instead of a baguette, a huge no no
for a French Dip. Inside the roll were merely two thinly
sliced pieces of roast beef. East Coast deli owners would
have been rolling in their graves had they seen this skimpy
portion of beef. The MSG free au jus had the perfect amount
of salt and was by far the best part of the French Dip.
Overall, I wouldn’t recommend
this “special” unless it is raining and/or
you don’t want to stray too far from the office.
