I've been driving by a place for
a couple of weeks after work that exclusively sells French
Dips. So I figured the first place I had to review for
this site was Rizzo’s.
The place is no bigger than the typical
backyard shed. After you walk in you are greeted by a
friendly high school kid at the counter and you see a
person who is most likely the kid’s father in the
back preparing the roast beef. At this point I just needed
a second to look at the menu because my choices were a
French Dip with or without cheese. I picked option #2.
Since the place is so tiny I had to eat my Dip outside
while being observed by Undependent Media’s own
Scott Muoio. When I first opened the bag I noticed right
away there wasn’t an au jus container. I found out
after I opened the sandwich that Rizzo’s
dips the beef in aujus and puts a small amount on the
roll. With this minute amount of au jus it’s difficult
to enjoy the dip in the traditional way. I did enjoy the
sandwich, but it was more like a roast beef sandwich than
a French Dip. The roast beef was tender, had great flavor
and the roll was perfect for a French dip. If Rizzo’s
gave you the au jus on the side I would go there often
because the dip was only 6 bucks. I just can’t make
a regular trip to Rizzo’s without the key
ingredient, the au jus.
