Generations of Hippies Learn Lawn Care the Seattle Way

In the New Jersey suburbs people live for their front lawns. Rich, poor, or somewhere in between The Garden State is flush with individuals either manicuring their greens themselves or hiring one of the seemingly thousands of landscapers to do it for them. And what defines the New Jersey lawn mowing experience is the ubiquitous gas-powered mower, the staple of Jersey lawn care.

In Seattle, Washington vegetation runs wild in ways even The Garden State can’t duplicate. And like the inhabitants of New Jersey, Seattleites take their lawn care very seriously. However, where “Gas is King” in New Jersey, Seattleites go old school, really old school.

Look around Seattle and you will find nary a gas powered mower in sight. Instead, push mowers dominate. Yes, the same push mowers invented in the 1800s remain the grass cutting device of choice for environmentally obsessed Seattleites.

But wait, there’s more. Some Seattleites take things a step further and hire goats to manicure their lawns. Yes, goats! With the goats’ four-chambered stomachs, voracious appetites, and ability to munch pretty much anything I suppose it makes sense, but no doubt it isn’t something you’ll see in most modern cities.

Still don’t believe me? Do an Internet search for “Seattle Goat Renters” and you’ll find plenty of options.

Indeed, it’s a weird world we live in but somehow Seattle always finds a way to push oddness to new lengths. Well done, Emerald City!
