America's last Olympic gold medalist,
Andre Ward shook up the 168 lb weight class last night
with a mystifying performance over current #1 Mikkel Kessler.
The Viking Warrior from Denmark had no answer for Ward's
slippery defense and accurate jab. Punches and head butts
opened cuts over both of Kessler's eyes early and the
great Dane looked like a deer in headlights throughout.
Certainly Ward used his head as well
as precision clinches as powerful weapons to confuse Kessler,
but it was his varying angles of attack that truly spelled
the Viking Warrior's demise. With an upright posture and
singularly straight ahead and straight back movement Kessler
was a sitting duck for Ward's octopus like entanglements.
Most surprising, however wasn't merely that Ward was able
to flummox Kessler with his odd movements but that he
had the power to put Kessler on the defense early and
often. Indeed, Ward is now the #1 super middleweight in
the world and should prove a handful for whoever he faces
next.
As for Kessler, this was an obvious
off night. Let's hope the Viking Warrior returns to form
soon so he can perhaps meet Ward again down the road.
