Houston, Texas was in a frenzy Saturday
Night as two warriors lit up the Toyota Center. When the
smoke cleared, the judges were unanimous in their decision:
a draw.
With a great start and several sluggish
middle rounds, hometown hero Rocky Juarez nearly pulled
off an upset as he closed the show strong against unbeaten
Indonesian, Chris John. With the WBA featherweight title
on the line, Juarez nearly scored a knockdown in each
of the last two rounds of the twelve round bout. However,
the crafty, determined Indonesian held on, figuratively
not literally, as he traded with the Texan down the stretch.
In the end, the result was a slightly surprising though
fair unanimous draw (Undependent Media had John winning
by one round).
It was tough luck for both fighters,
both of whom felt they should have won.
John controlled the middle rounds
with his long jab and angular style. Juarez, however,
was not without his own highlights, occassionally rocking
the taller John with a bullish onslaught. Juarez held
his own the first four rounds, clearly won the last two,
and stole the eighth to break up John's middle monopoly.
All in all it was a great bout that
showcased the talent and heart of both men. And that's
what boxing is all about.
John moves to 42-0-2
(22 KO)
Juarez moves to
28-4 (20 KO)
