Ground Frog Day in Snohomish
February 11, 2008

Factoid #21

by Scott Muoio

The Snohomish Ground Frog casts a chubby shadow as master frognosticator.

It takes someone with a lot more creativity than me to concoct something as ridiculous as Ground Frog Day. And believe it or not, the good people of Snohomish, Washington are just those sorts of people!

Why dabble in ground hogs as they do in Punxatauny, PA when you can ride the ribbit instead? That’s the mantra in rural Snohomish County as each February 2nd the citizens gather ‘round the bog for some “frognostication” courtesy of Snohomish Slew, the big green guy, himself. Hardly a Kermit, Slew is apparently over 100 years old since he existed during the time of Lewis and Clarke. But just because he’s old doesn’t mean he can’t forecast the weather better than some silly rodent with an overbite.

The modern festival to celebrate Slew’s meteorological prowess was invented in 2006. Surprisingly, however, that doesn’t mean his history isn’t deep and ribbeting, I mean riveting. To find out more, check out the Snohomish Ground Frog Website (www.groundfrogday.org) to learn all about white tailed bucks, bald eagles, and the big Marco Polo game that brought the green guy his fame.

Will it be six more weeks of soggy winter or will a wet spring be in the cards? Join Snohomish Slew each and every February 2nd in Snohomish County and find out!
