The Greatest Female Professional
Wrestler of All-Time
Anyone who grew up watching professional
wrestling during the 1980s will recognize the name The Fabulous
Moolah. But what most probably never realized is that Moolah (real
name Mary Lillian Ellison) was in her 50s during that time. That's
right: while most men and women are closing in on retirement,
Moolah was defying the odds of age and circumstance ruling the
WWF's women's division, capturing titles in the very same sport
she began competing in during the late 1940s. Now if that isn't
a legacy to be proud of I don't know what might be.
More than merely a great wrestler
and an excellent wrestling character, Moolah was an icon and groundbreaker
in both the world of sports and entertainment. Moolah carved a
place for women in a male dominated world not by taking off her
clothes or flaunting her feminine sexuality, as is common today.
Instead, Moolah made her mark through talent, charisma, and an
undeterred resolve to participate in the profession she loved.
Not only did Moolah participate, she succeeded in her career as
few others ever have. Ruling the women's professional wrestling
world for decades Moolah won her first title on September 18,
1956 and her last championship on October 17, 1999 at the age
of 76. During that time she had a record reign of 28 years, competed
in numerous federations capturing titles in all them, and dominated
around the country and the world. Simply remarkable and a testament
to her love for the sport and amazing ability to break barriers
that had never been broken before.
It is with a heavy heart that
we discovered the news of Moolah's passing on November 2nd. However,
it is with great admiration, respect, and reverance that we honor
her legacy today as one of the true pioneers in women's athletics,
entertainment, and as a wrestling icon for all-time.
