The greatest potato chips in the
world are from Seattle.
Remember those delicious potato chips from the early '90s named
Krunchers? And if so, do you recall the glorious taste of their
mesquite barbecue flavored variety? I do and if my recollection
is correct, Jays brand Krunchers Mesquite Barbecue Chips were
the very first (and best) mesquite barbecue chips to ever hit
the American market. But, like so many other tastes that arrived
before their time, and in this case before the early millennium's
trend of producing every flavor imaginable, Krunchers Mesquite
came and went registering barely a blip on the snack food radar.
Sure, they may still exist somewhere in the midwest, but for the
majority of us we shall never know their greatness again if ever
at all.
Today, one's choice of snack food is virtually unlimited. Nearly
any flavor combination you can think of has been done and a mere
perusal of the snack aisle can be as strenuous as a trip to the
D.M.V. Yet for all of today's numerous choices those Krunchers
Mesquite kettle cooked chips still stand as my very favorite chips
of all-time. Or should I more accurately write, "stood"
as my very favorite potato chips of all-time, that is, before
I moved to Seattle and tasted the new pinnacle of fried potato
barbecue goodness: Tim's Cascade Snacks Hawaiian Kettle Style
Luau Barbecue Potato Chips. A mouthfull like that never tasted
so wonderful!
Concocted in Auburn, Washington, distributed out of Algona, Washington,
and inspired by the tropical tastes of our beloved 50th state,
Tim's Hawaiian Luau BBQ Chips are simply incredible. Spicy, tangy,
sweet and salty, and packing enough crunch to wake a sleeping
giant, these chips are incredibly delicious. At $3 bucks per 9
ounce bag they don't come cheap, but with a taste this exquisite
you really can't put a price on the most glorious taste in all
of snack food land. I ate an entire bag in one sitting just the
other day, maybe the first time I have ever entertained such gluttony.
Now if that isn't a primo endorsement then I don't know what might
be.
Looking over the ingredients on a bag of Tim's Luau BBQ Chips
it is difficult to discern which element makes these chips the
best. Beside the usual suspects, there is one mysterious ingredient
that does raise an eyebrow: Natural Flavors (includes smoke).
Could "smoke," whatever that means, be the key ingredient
in creating the unique Luau BBQ taste? Perhaps, but I imagine
only Tim, himself, knows that answer for sure, and like the creators
of the other great wonders of the world, I doubt he's talking.
No matter the reason, Tim's Luau BBQ Chips are the greatest snack
food since the original Krunchers. And if it weren't for my now
calling Seattle, Washington home, I doubt I'd ever have discovered
this essential truth. Glory be!!
Below is a picture of the Godfather
of kettle cooked mesquite glory, Krunchers.
Nearly the same bag I remember from the '90s, these chips are
freakin' delicious in their own right!
