Comedian Chris Rock lets viewers behind the curtain to reveal the secrets of kinky hair maintenance in the entertaining and informative documentary, Good Hair.  Wielding his quick wit and snappy everyman rapport, Rock visits barber shops, speaks with black hair business people, and spends an inordinate amount of time at the massively ridiculous Bronner Brothers black hair mega-convention, all with hilarious results.

Comedy is mixed with fact resulting in a funny education for the viewer.  Celebrities reveal intimate details of their extensions.  We learn that thousands of dollars per person are spent annually by average women on weave maintenance.  We hear that relaxer’s best effect is making white people feel relaxed when they see a black person sporting the look.  Jheri curl is explored and dismissed, we follow the distribution of the weave from India and the monks of Asia to Harlem hairdressers, and finally visit with a skinny, gay, white stylist whose black hair grooming antics are the envy of all.

Many people may have known beforehand that you never touch a black woman’s hair but nowhere is that made funnier and clearer than by the women themselves (and their husbands) in Rock’s pet project.  Watch Good Hair and you, too will see why black hair is a big, big deal.
